Loss of transforming growth factor-[beta] type II receptor promotes metastatic head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma
Article Abstract:
The overexpression of K-ras or H-ras and loss of transforming growth factor-[beta] type II receptor (TGF[beta]RII) are common events in human head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). A new therapeutic strategy for HNSCC is provided by targeting common oncogenic pathways in tumor epithelia together with blocking effect of TGF[beta]1 on tumor stroma.

Cell population heterogeneity during growth of Bacillus subtilis
Article Abstract:
Cells of Bacillus subtilis at the mid-exponential phase of growth are a mixed population of two strikingly different cell types. Cell population heterogeneity could enable Bacillus subtilis to exploit its present location through the production of sessile cells as well as to explore new environmental niches through the generation of nomadic cells.

The cleavage of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, MITF, by caspases plays an essential role in melanocyte and melanoma cell apoptosis
Article Abstract:
Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is identified as a new substrate to caspases and the cleavage site after Asp 345 in the C-terminal domain is characterized. The proapoptotic function gained by MITF following its processing by caspases provides a tissue-restricted means to modulate death in melanocyte and melanomas cells.
